The 160 GS was introduced in 1962 and represented a significant departure from t eh basic design of the 150 GS.  Essentially the body, motor and suspension of the 150 GS was scrapped and Piaggio went about creating the evolution of the Vespa 125/150 into the totally new 160 GS.  Some of the major changes were;

  • Entirely new and slimmer frame

  • Physically larger

  • Front mudguard much larger and cowls redesigned

  • Left side cowl now detachable and glovebox replaced with space for a sparewheel

  • Steering lock

  • Shape and size of seats changes

  • New engine and upgraded crankshaft and bearings were enlarged

  • Motor integrated with the swing-arm

  • Dell'Orto SI 27/23 carburettor with integrated choke

  • New flywheel and magneto with an output of 35 W

  • Suspension and brake drums changed.  Front damper and spring in a single unit

  • Rim now split in the middle rather than off-set
